Why patients are choosing Miami — and why Dr. J Epstein is at the center of the movement
For years, global hair restoration conversations have centered around two destinations: Turkey and Colombia. Today, a third destination is quietly emerging: Miami.
Driven by a growing demand by the world’s most discriminating individuals for refined, natural results and a more elevated patient experience, Miami is becoming the ultimate choice for patients who value aesthetics, discretion, and craftsmanship. The shift is being led largely by world-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. J Epstein, whose Coral Gables–based practice and leadership of Foundation Aesthetic Hair Restoration Method are helping position the city as a new global destination for hair restoration.
Unlike traditional medical tourism, Miami offers something different: accessibility, luxury, and artistry. Patients are no longer traveling solely for price or speed; they are traveling for precision, style, and results that blend seamlessly into their appearance. The same individuals who care deeply about fashion, wellness, and lifestyle are now approaching hair restoration with the same level of discernment.
New Yorkers are flying in for weekend procedures. International patients are choosing Miami for its ease, discretion, and world-class care. Many arrive not only for treatment, but for the experience itself; to look good, feel good, eat well, and return home refreshed.
For more than three decades, Dr. J Epstein has been quietly setting the benchmark for natural, hand-executed hair restoration. Often referred to as the “doctor’s doctor,” he is the surgeon trusted by plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and discerning patients seeking undetectable results. His philosophy remains simple: every procedure performed personally, every detail refined, and every result designed to look entirely natural.
As Miami continues to grow as a global center for aesthetics, Dr. J Epstein stands at the forefront; helping redefine what modern hair restoration looks like.
Q&A with Dr. J Epstein
You’ve spent more than three decades advancing hair restoration. What continues to inspire you today?
Dr. J Epstein:
Watching the field evolve and helping drive that evolution. Thirty years ago, transplants looked nothing like they do today. Now it’s refined aesthetics, smaller instruments, tighter placement, and better planning. My greatest satisfaction is refining techniques so results remain undetectable and patients benefit from the best version of every method.
Hair restoration has grown significantly in popularity. What separates a good surgeon from a truly exceptional one?
Dr. J Epstein:
It starts with focus and intent. A good surgeon can achieve a passable result. A great surgeon obsesses over every single graft: direction, angle, and density. They perform all the aesthetic steps themselves and work with a dedicated, full-time team that shares their precision. They don’t delegate artistry. Every incision is deliberate.
You’re helping position Miami as a global destination for hair restoration. Why is the city becoming so attractive?
Dr. J Epstein:
Miami has evolved dramatically. It’s no longer a secondary option; it’s a destination for medicine, aesthetics, and innovation. Patients can fly in, have surgery the next day, and return home shortly afterward. With our no-shave FUE approach, most patients are presentable within 24 hours. Miami offers excellence without needing to travel overseas.
You’re known for delivering natural-looking results. What defines true authority in hair restoration?
Dr. J Epstein:
True authority is cumulative, it’s earned, not claimed. It’s the result of thousands of procedures, years of refinement, and the respect of your peers. When other surgeons refer their own patients or family members to you, that’s authority.
If you were choosing a surgeon as a patient, what would you look for?
Dr. J Epstein:
Specialization above all else. You want someone who has made hair restoration their life’s work. They should personally design and perform the procedure and have extensive experience across different patients and hair types.
You’re also known for correcting unsuccessful procedures. What are the most common issues you see?
Dr. J Epstein:
Limited donor supply, scarring, and unnatural design. Many patients come from clinics where per-diem technicians perform most of the work. Repairing these cases requires both technical skill and rebuilding trust.
There’s increasing use of robotics in hair restoration. Why do you remain fully manual?
Dr. J Epstein:
Because hair restoration is artistic. Robotics can extract follicles- although not as well as the cutting-edge devices with which we work- but they cannot design a hairline. Every patient is different, and artistry requires judgment.
There’s also growing interest in stem cells and regenerative treatments. How do you view these developments?
Dr. J Epstein:
They’re promising, but not yet proven. Hair restoration surgery remains the gold standard for permanent, natural results.
You’ve mentored many surgeons throughout your career. Why is that important to you?
Dr. J Epstein:
It’s a responsibility. I was mentored early in my career, and I believe in passing that knowledge forward to preserve quality in the field.
What has been your proudest professional recognition?
Dr. J Epstein:
Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at The Aesthetic Show was meaningful, but the greatest recognition comes from patient satisfaction and peer referrals.
How do you balance business with ethics?
Dr. J Epstein:
I limit surgeries to maintain quality and give each patient my full attention.
