Some weddings are beautiful. Others become unforgettable expressions of style, culture, and personal storytelling.
Amanda and David Cancel’s extraordinary three day celebration on Italy’s breathtaking Isola del Garda was exactly that. Set against the backdrop of a magnificent Venetian Gothic castle overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Garda, their wedding blended timeless elegance with contemporary sophistication, creating an experience that felt both intimate and cinematic.
For Amanda, the dream began more than a decade ago.
While on a sabbatical in Italy during her years at Novartis, she discovered the beauty of the Italian lakes and made a promise to herself that one day she would be married there. With her Italian heritage and deep appreciation for the country’s history, architecture, and culture, the vision remained with her for years.
When she and David became engaged, they looked beyond the familiar shores of Lake Como and found something even more personal on Lake Garda. Captivated by its charming villages, historic castles, lemon groves, and the spectacular private island of Isola del Garda, they knew they had found the perfect setting to begin the next chapter of their lives.
For many of their guests, the celebration was every bit as meaningful as the destination itself.
“My side of the family had never traveled outside the country before,” Amanda says. “For everyone, it felt like a dream come true.”
Fashion was woven into every moment of the celebration.
Amanda selected a custom Galia Lahav couture gown inspired by classic Italian elegance, featuring intricate lace and graceful long sleeves that echoed the beauty of the historic castle. Throughout the weekend she changed into several custom designed looks, including a striking welcome party dress by New York designer Joy. Rather than embracing familiar Italian clichés, the celebration drew inspiration from the country’s rich colors, artistry, and refined traditions, with pomegranate and eggplant tones, strolling musicians, and an elevated interpretation of an Italian marketplace.
Across three unforgettable days, Amanda wore six carefully curated ensembles, each reflecting a different mood while remaining true to her sophisticated aesthetic.
The couple’s love story is equally remarkable.
Before ever meeting, Amanda and David had unknowingly shared the same city, many of the same friends, favorite restaurants, and even similar daily routines while living in Boston. Yet their paths never truly crossed. It was only after both had moved to New York that fate finally brought them together.
Their first date lasted five hours.
The second lasted just as long.
By the third, both realized they had found something extraordinary.
For David, that realization came almost instantly. As he approached Amanda during one of their early dates, he paused before reaching the table.
Later, he told her that something inside simply said, “She’s the one.”
Today, their partnership extends far beyond their personal lives.
David serves on the Board of the Whitney Museum of American Art, while Amanda recently joined the museum’s Digital Art Committee. Together they support emerging artists, champion cultural initiatives, and host gatherings that bring together innovators, collectors, and creative minds. Philanthropy and the arts have become central to the life they are building together.
Although both have already enjoyed remarkable professional success, they continue to look toward the future with the same spirit of curiosity and innovation that first connected them. They have even discussed launching a new venture together, combining Amanda’s scientific background with David’s entrepreneurial experience.
Following their celebration in Italy, the newlyweds traveled to Montenegro for their honeymoon, continuing a relationship shaped by exploration, culture, and a shared passion for discovering the world.
Amanda and David Cancel’s wedding was more than an elegant celebration. It was a reflection of who they are, thoughtful, adventurous, creative, and deeply connected to family, friends, and the experiences that matter most.
On the shores of Lake Garda, surrounded by history and beauty, they created not simply a wedding, but a lasting memory that perfectly captured the art of the modern wedding.
