Grass Valley, CA
One of Northern California’s longest-running, and most cherished independent music gatherings is stepping into an exciting new chapter. The 34th Annual High Sierra Music Festival will debut its new home at the scenic Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California, bringing fresh energy while preserving the soul and spirit that has defined the festival since its founding in 1991.
This move marks a major evolution for High Sierra, making the experience more accessible than ever before. Located closer to the Bay Area and surrounded by abundant lodging options, Grass Valley offers fans a smoother journey while maintaining the immersive magic, community atmosphere, and musical discovery that have made High Sierra a beloved tradition for generations.
The first phase of the 2026 lineup has officially been revealed, and it perfectly reflects High Sierra’s signature blend of genre-defying artistry, legendary collaborations, electrifying tributes, and emerging voices. True to its reputation as a curator of unforgettable musical moments, the festival has assembled an inspired mix of jam, funk, Americana, soul, and experimental performers, with additional artist announcements still to come. Leading the charge is The Word, featuring John Medeski, Robert Randolph, North Mississippi Allstars, and Ray Ray Holloman, alongside Don Was & The Pan Detroit Ensemble, Cymande, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, and the always explosive Dumpstaphunk. The lineup continues to expand with standout performances from Eggy, Lebo & Friends featuring George Porter Jr., Jay Lane, Jen Hartswick, and Holly Bowling, as well as Mountain Grass Unit, The Rumble, and Big Something.

Fans can also look forward to The Breaks featuring Stanton Moore, Eddie Roberts, and Robert Walter, along with Judith Hill, Steve Poltz, lespecial, BALTHVS, Dizgo, Scott Pemberton, Pink Talking Fish, Marty O’Reilly, Steely Dead, Magoo, Rose City Band, Sway Wild, River Eckert, Boy Golden, Cassandra Lewis, The Point, Paul McDonald & The Mourning Doves, The Westones, Psycodelics, Family Company, Minor Gold, and Moga Family Band, with even more artists yet to be revealed.
The full lineup announcement is expected soon, promising additional surprises that will further cement High Sierra’s reputation as one of the most musically adventurous festivals in the country.
Sierra has long stood apart thanks to its vibrant and eclectic identity. Rooted in the improvisational spirit of post–Grateful Dead jam culture, the festival effortlessly blends
bluegrass, funk, Americana, singer-songwriter traditions, and international influences into a single, harmonious celebration.
Beyond the stages, High Sierra offers an immersive world of creativity and connection. Festivalgoers can participate in daily parades, explore handmade crafts, and experience acoustic troubadour sessions performed in intimate, in-the-round settings. The beloved Family Village returns with professional childcare services, making the event welcoming for attendees of all ages. Yoga sessions, themed community camps, wine and beer tastings, silent discos, artist-led workshops, sunrise kickball, and the iconic Dr. Bronner’s Foam Bath create a playful and unforgettable atmosphere that extends far beyond the music.

Set across nearly 90 acres of towering pine trees, shaded campgrounds, a peaceful lake, and historic buildings, the Nevada County Fairgrounds provides an ideal backdrop for High Sierra’s next chapter. Often called “California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds,” the venue enhances the festival experience while maintaining its intimate charm.
Festival attendees will benefit from over 1,000 nearby hotel rooms and more than 300 Airbnb options within a 10-mile radius. Travel is convenient, with access from three major airports: San Francisco International Airport just two hours away, Sacramento International Airport approximately 75 minutes away, and Reno-Tahoe International Airport slightly over an hour away.
On-site camping expanded RV hookups, day parking, and early entry VIP options ensure flexibility for every type of attendee. Festival VIP packages now include hotel lodging options, while expanded late-night venues, additional stages, and enhanced family programming promise an even richer experience.
Festival producer Dave Margulies acknowledges the emotional significance of the move, while embracing its opportunities: “Quincy will always hold a special place in our hearts. This was a very difficult decision, but we have to be in a location that offers patrons a variety of lodging options. By moving to Grass Valley, we’re able to provide more comforts and conveniences without sacrificing any of the elements that make High Sierra so special.”
Despite its growth and new location, High Sierra remains deeply committed to its independent spirit. With attendance intentionally capped at fewer than 7,500 people, the festival preserves an intimate, welcoming atmosphere rarely found in modern music events.
Margulies emphasizes that High Sierra’s magic goes far beyond the lineup: “High Sierra’s soul remains unchanged. It’s still an intimate gathering where the spotlight is equally on the music and the incredible community. What makes this festival so beloved is its
independence. Everyone involved, from artists and crew to vendors, volunteers, and fans, brings their best. That combination creates High Sierra Lifers who return year after year.”
As High Sierra Music Festival enters its 34th year, the move to Grass Valley represents more than a change in scenery. It signals a renewed commitment to accessibility, comfort, and continued musical exploration, all while preserving the authenticity that has defined the festival for over three decades. With its carefully curated lineup, immersive experiences, and fiercely independent ethos, High Sierra continues to stand as a beacon for true music lovers seeking connection, discovery, and freedom.

This July 4th weekend, beneath the towering pines of Grass Valley, a new chapter will unfold. And if history is any indication, it will be one filled with unforgettable performances, lifelong friendships, and the kind of magic that only High Sierra can deliver.
